Combining Google Adwords and AdSense for Smart Marketing

Google has come up with a variety of different services that have vastly improved the function of the internet. Another area of the internet that they have cornered is the marketing side. Google Adwords and AdSense help people who want to advertise their service or product as well as people who want to increase their revenue through advertising.

Smart Marketing

Google Adwords is an advertising campaign available to those who wish to drive up sales as well as website visitors. It works by placing ads for the subscribers’ product on websites and Google searches. It does this by methodically choosing site and searches the products’ users are likely to visit, thus providing the most potential clients with access to their site.

Google AdSense, Google Adwords

Google AdSense can be used as a way to increase revenue through advertisements run on one’s own site. Every time an advertisement is clicked, a portion of the payment Google receives will go to the AdSense subscriber. With websites that have high amounts of visitors, this can provide a fair amount of additional revenue.

While it is not that hard to determine what target audience one is aiming for, it is more difficult to successfully reach that audience. The average internet user has billions of pages to choose from when searching for a product or service. It is important to be seen as quickly and as frequently as possible.

This is one of the huge benefits that the Google run advertising program Adwords has to offer. Millions of people choose Google as their search engine every hour. Each time a term is searched, one will see those advertisements lining the right side of the page as well as directly under the search bar.

Google Adwords is a program that provides advertisements that are specifically directed at one’s target audience. When a company signs up for the program, they list the people they are trying to reach. Then Google Adwords will place their advertisement on content specific websites or searches. This helps gain the most visibility for a specific group of people.

AdSense Category Blocking Feature Released

Google has announced the release of a new category blocking feature for AdSense following a successful period of beta testing.

AdSense Category Blocking Feature ReleasedThe application is available to users in all English-speaking countries and allows websites greater control over the commercials that appear on their pages.

Atul Bhandari, product manager for AdSense, said: "It helps you scalably prevent competitors' ads and ads that you might not find suitable for your audience from appearing on your site."

Under the new control system, it is possible to opt out from receiving commercials from 170 different categories, such as travel and jobs.

To give users a better idea of which ads to block and which to maintain, Google provides information on total impressions and revenue percentages for each category.

Earlier this week, Charise Wong, a representative of the Inside AdSense team, advised websites to optimise their pages so they can make the most use out of placement targeting opportunities.

AdWords Campaign Experiments Allows for Testing of Commercials Source: AdWords Campaign Experiments Allows for Testing of Commercials

The AdWords Campaign Experiments (ACE) service has been updated to allow users to try out and measure the impact of different types of text and display commercials.

AdWords Campaign Experiments Allows for Testing of CommercialsGoogle launched the free tool earlier this year, giving companies employing pay per click services the option to carry out tests on keywords, ad groups, placements and bids.

It has now included ads on this list, offering the ability to trial different headlines, calls to action, display URLs and commercial text.

Gordon Zhu, a member of the Inside AdWords team, explained: "You can compare statistics for experiment versus control traffic and receive statistically significant results, which tell you with confidence whether your experimental changes improved your performance."

ACE was rolled out across the world by Google in September following a successful trial of the service in the US.

The search engine said at the time that ACE should prove useful to companies which are considering making changes to their keyword list.

New Layout for AdSense Commercials

The content ad units run by Google AdSense have been redesigned.

New Layout for AdSense CommercialsUnder the revamp, titles, descriptions and URLs are now displayed in rows instead of columns, while the URL will now be listed on the same line as the title.

AdSense product manager Amy Wu told users of pay per click management services that the changes have been designed to make the adverts more space-efficient and visually appealing.

Font sizes will also be increased for some AdSense commercials, with the changes due to be rolled out in the next couple of weeks.

“During testing, the redesigned ads performed extremely well,” Ms Wu said.

“We’ll continue to experiment and innovate on our formats to help you monetise your content.”

Last month, Google advised its service users that they need to switch to its Custom Search Engine if they are still employing the old AdSense system, which is being phased out over the course of the next few months.

Google AdSense Upgrade Advised

Google has announced it is retiring its AdSense product.

Google AdSense Upgrade AdvisedThe company has been running the Google Custom Search Engine (CSE) for the past two years and has now decided that its success means AdSense can be dropped.

Users of SEO services were advised that if their Google logo on their search results page reads ‘Powered by Google’ it is on the old AdSense system and needs to be upgraded.

Katrina Kurnit of the Inside AdSense team said: “AdSense for search with CSE gives you more control over your search results without changing how you earn money showing AdSense for search ads.”

She added that the old system will continue to work normally “for a few more months” until the retirement procedure goes through.

Earlier this week, Emel Mutlu, marketing manager at the Google Display Network, advised that using the company’s DoubleClick Ad Planner service can give companies “deeper and more robust insight” into attracting their target audience to their website.

Google to Reveal AdSense Split?

Marketers are being told by a "search engine guru" that Google may be about to reveal how much money it keeps for itself from AdSense advertisements carried by online publishers.

Google to Reveal AdSense Split?Writing for Search Engine Land, Danny Sullivan said that the internet company may potentially be keeping back more money for itself "in rough times" and giving less to outlets such as news websites.

He suggested that its inability to release figures to date could make it vulnerable to anti-competition claims, a point that may interest marketers who use PPC services.

The expert highlighted the case of the Italian Federation of Newspapers and Periodicals asking a national authority to look at Google conduct.

Mr Sullivan, who has been covering search engine developments since 1995, said that it was this action that "sparked" the possibility of the company finally publishing its share of AdSense money from advertisers.

Google advertises the feature as a "hassle-free" means to earn revenue for website publishers by displaying another brand’s promotion on their website.

AdSense Introduces Google Grants Scheme

AdSense Introduces Google Grants SchemeThe ads can appear on sites when the search engine is unable to serve a paid version, which may be a result of the item simply being unavailable or when the publisher has been unable to verify their address.

Pay per click users who previously used the old service will now find the activity is being continued via Google Grants, which means non-profit partners can benefit from the free publicity.

AdSense assures publishers who show non-Google ads from a different URL or a solid colour that they are unaffected by the change, while others who previously used PSAs will see a blank space.

Google Grants assists more than 6,000 organisations and allows them to promote their websites, with the US Fund for Unicef's ecommerce site being just one of the body's to benefit.

Google AdSense Killing PSA Ads

The Google AdSense Blog announced they are retiring the legendary Google AdSense PSA, Public Service Announcements, ads that Google AdSense has been using to fill ads when they can't otherwise.

Google AdSense would show PSA ads, free ads for non-profits, for a number of reasons including the page is new, the page has sensitive content, Google can't access or understand the page, the account has been disabled or pending approval, and so on. Google described the PSAs as, "PSAs are unpaid non-profit organization ads that are served to pages when targeted ads are unavailable, or when Google is unable to gather content from the page. Publishers do not receive earnings for clicks made on PSAs."

"Big changes" coming to Google

A Google employee says that there will be some very “big changes” at the company soon, which could see a major shift in how it deals with Adsense.

The Google employee, who goes by the
name Moultano, said: “At the organisational level, Google is essentially chaos.” He added that once an employee has demonstrated that he or she is good enough to do stuff on their own, “you're pretty much free to work on whatever you think is important.”

This freedom, which includes 20 percent of paid time devoted entirely to personal projects, could be causing problems for Google. Moultano said that there is no mechanism in place for shifting priorities, which could be particularly devastating to the company if it needs to change its direction.

That said, Google has been doing extremely well with its current business model. Its fourth quarter 2010 results showed a revenue increase of 26 percent on the same period in 2009, so while it has changed its CEO, it's unlikely that it will shake up the company structure too much to deal with the “chaos” one worker suggests is present.

One area that Google will focus on, however, is Adsense, with Moultano revealing that Google has been working on revising Adsense for a long time - and that it has recently made some good progress. He said: “You can expect some big changes here very shortly.”

Moultano said it's difficult to provide ads that qualify as high quality while also remaining true to Google's goal of providing on-topic advertising, but the changes it plans to make appear to be aimed in this direction.

Moultano also suggested that Google would “dramatically” change how it employs links, but did not specify what we are likely to see. Regardless, it looks like some major changes are coming to Google products soon.
